Why is my transaction failing?

While the vast majority of transactions through Dintero are completed without issues, there are rare cases where a payment may not go through as expected. This guide outlines the most common reasons and how to handle them if they occur.

Situations that may cause a failed payment

Verification or security steps not completed

Some payment methods require the customer to verify the purchase using BankID, 3D Secure, or similar. If this step is not completed, the payment will be declined.

Expired or blocked card

If the customer’s card has expired or been blocked by their bank, the payment will not be accepted.

Unsupported card type

Dintero supports most Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards. Other types of cards, such as some international or business cards, may not be accepted.

Customer closes the payment window too early

In some cases—particularly when paying with Vipps or Swish—the customer may complete the payment in their app but close the browser or tab before being redirected back to the webshop. This can result in the order not being confirmed, even if the payment was successful.

Technical error outside your control

Although rare, a payment provider (e.g. Vipps, Klarna, Swedbank Pay, Worldline or others) may experience a brief technical issue. In most cases, these are resolved quickly and automatically.

Multiple sessions open at once

If a customer opens the checkout in multiple browser tabs or windows at the same time, this may interfere with the payment session.

Card payments (Visa and Mastercard)

Transactions using Visa or Mastercard may fail if:

  • The card has insufficient funds

  • The card has expired or been blocked

  • The bank has flagged the transaction as suspicious

  • The verification (3D Secure / BankID) was not completed

  • The merchant’s agreement with the acquirer is temporarily inactive

Wallet and app-based payments

For services like Vipps, Swish, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or MobilePay, the most common causes of payment failure are:

  • Expired or removed card in the customer’s wallet

  • Technical issues with the wallet provider or acquirer

  • The customer’s phone number or app is not correctly linked

  • The wallet is used in a checkout flow it doesn’t support (e.g. Apple Pay in an embedded checkout)

Invoice and Buy Now, Pay Later (Klarna, Billie, Walley)

Payments via Klarna, Billie or Walley may be declined if:

  • The customer does not pass the credit check

  • The merchant’s agreement is inactive or not fully configured

  • There is a temporary technical issue with the payment provider

What to do if you’re unsure

If you’re unsure why a transaction failed, we recommend checking whether the customer received an error message, and verifying which payment method was used. You are always welcome to contact our support team – ideally with the Dintero transaction ID or session ID – and we will help you identify the cause.
